As we store, share and stream more of our lives online, the Internet grows bigger every day. Having just turned 25, the Internet has become a force for overthrowing the status quo, sometimes even governments, as it brings people together.

But powering the online world requires energy, a lot of it. Already, our online world, if counted as a country, would rank sixth in the world in electricity use. The rapid growth of our online world could actually help our offline world become greener, if the electricity that powers the Internet is produced by modern renewables sources of energy.

That can happen as long as the companies building the Internet decide to use clean energy, like the kind from the wind and the sun, to provide its power. Thankfully, some companies are already doing that like Google, Facebook and Apple.

In its 18th edition released in 2012, the Guide evaluated leading consumer electronics companies based on their commitment and progress in three environmental criteria: Energy and Climate, Greener Products, and Sustainable Operations.
